Wet spinning of a library of carbohydrate low molecular weight gels

Recently, a low molecular weight hydrogel based on carbohydrate alkyl amide has been successfully used as biomaterial for neuron cell culture and 3D printing. Varying the structure should make it possible to extend library of hydrogels available these applications improve their performances. Thirteen molecules easy synthetize designed be potentially biocompatible were prepared. They are gluconamide, glucoheptonamide, galactonamide, glucamide, aliphatic chains glycine. Their gelation in water was investigated thermal conditions wet spinning conditions, namely by dimethylsulfoxide-water exchange under injection. Nine give conditions. By spinning, six self-assemble fast enough, within few seconds, form continous filaments. Therefore, method enables shape injection mechanically fragile hydrogels, notably perspective Depending structure, persistent or soluble gel filaments obtained. The microstructures varied, featuring entangled ribbons, platelets particles. In gelation, with symmetrical polar head (galacto, glucoheptono) flat ribbons an asymmetrical (gluco) helical ribbons. introduction extra glycine linker disturbs this trend.
